On Friday, June 12, 2020 Law no. 14.010/2020 was published, providing for the Emergency and Transitional Legal Regime of relations of Private Law (RJET) during the coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19).

The Law, in relation to privacy and data protection issues, through its art. 20, amended the wording of Federal Law No. 13,709/18, the Brazilian General Data Protection Law (“LGPD”), postponing the sanctions provided for in art. 52 and the application of arts. 53 and 54 to August 1, 2021.

The LGPD is expected to come into effect on May 3, 2021 as per the terms of the Provisional Measure No. 959, which remains pending of analyses by the National Congress. If the Provisional Measure is not approved, amended or analyzed by the scheduled deadline, the LGPD will become effective on August 15, 2020.
